Galerie Intussen is proud to invite to you our midsummer celebration, where we commemorate the summer solstice coinciding with the 750 year anniversary of the city of Amsterdam. As one of Europe’s most iconic cities, Amsterdam has evolved over centuries—from its humble beginnings as a fishing village on the Amstel river to a global hub of culture and art. We take midsummer as an opportunity to reflect on our relationship with the environment, as well as broaden our understanding on the importance of sunlight. We pay tribute to the light of the summer’s sun as the beginning of life, the facilitator of energy and warmth for our ecosystems, as well as acknowledge the current environmental challenges our society faces due to climate change. This celebration also invites us to honor Mother Earth, whose balance we must preserve in the face of ecological disruption.
Our event features a multidisciplinary program that borrows from a diverse background of artists and collaborators that have been inspired by the occasion of midsummer, and choose to treat sunlight as a conceptual beacon. Our program features, dance, music, films, rituals, and closes with a set by DJ Rene Calderon, who fuses Afro-Cuban rhythms with electronic music to create a vibrant, percussion-driven style he calls "Rumba Eléctrica." In a year when we mark 750 years of Amsterdam’s spirit and resilience, we draw parallels between the endurance of this city and the natural world that sustains us.
Galerie Intussen seeks to promote an occasion where celebration meets reflection, where artists and participant can relate to each other’s cultures and embrace a stronger sense of community. Join us in welcoming the summer’s sun!
